Many of our customers are facing increasing questions about the sustainability of our lumber and we too are concerned about quality forestry practices. Banks Hardwoods has completed the certification process for the Forest Stewardship Council® and offers FSC® certified hardwood lumber to our customers.
As global consumers of hardwood products have become more conscious of the current environmental issues, there has been an increase in the demand for third-party certified hardwood lumber that comes from responsibly managed forests. FSC is the world's most widely recognized forest certification program. We selected FSC not only for its global recognition, but also so that our customers will have access to certified lumber that would apply to USGBC projects.
We still purchase a strong percentage of our material from sustainable forest lands that are not, and may never be, officially certified. We are doing our best to make sure we favor those companies with the most reputable practices. We can honestly say that the majority of our North American lumber is harvested in a sustainable manner, and our producers do a good job of cutting timber and managing the forests in which they work.
